Your filter plays an important role in your pool. Without the filter, your pool’s water would quickly become dirty, murky, and filled with debris. That’s why taking proper care of the filter is essential for pool owners in Spring, Texas. At Champions Pool Repair & Service, we understand that it can be difficult to know what your filter needs to function at its best, so we’ve laid out some important information about filter maintenance:

  1. DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

The filter media is what makes a DE filter different from its counterparts. In a DE filter, the diatomaceous earth itself acts as the media. This extremely fine powder is created by grinding up the fossilized exoskeletons of diatoms. Because the bone material is porous, it makes for an excellent filter to keep debris out of pool water. A fabric-covered filter grid keeps the DE from washing back into the pool, keeping your water sparkling clean. A key benefit of a DE filter is its easy maintenance. Pool owners simply add new diatomaceous earth directly into their skimmer, where a pump sucks the filter media into place. When adding new DE, be sure to keep an eye on the pressure gauge – when it falls below 8 pounds or indicates it is in the “safe zone,” enough DE has been added to the filter. Maintenance, such as backwashing and adding new DE, is typically only required once or twice each year.

  1. Sand Filters

Sand filters contain a layer of special-grade sand, and are typically built out of fiberglass, concrete, or metal for durability. Water enters the filter through an inlet pipe and is directed to a water distribution head. From there, gravity pulls the water through the sand and towards the bottom of the filter, allowing for any debris to be caught by the small particles. Clean water then flows out through the pick-up unit and outlet pipe. Pool owners can tell when maintenance is required by keeping an eye on the pressure gauges located at the filter’s inlet and outlet pipes. If the inlet pipe indicates a higher pressure reading than the outlet pipe, backwashing is required. Additionally, every 5 years or so, the sand in the filter should be changed in order to effectively catch debris from your pool’s water. A Spring, Texas, pool technician will be able to help with this.

  1. Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters allow water to pass through the surface, where debris are captured and stored until the cartridge is replaced. Because of the low level of maintenance required, this is an extremely popular filter choice for many pool owners. When maintenance is required, the cartridges can either be cleaned or replaced. To clean the cartridge, simply rinse it off with a hose or soak it in a gentle soap. However, keep in mind that, no matter how rigorously you cleaned your cartridge, they will still need to be replaced every 3 to 5 years.
